Espevær Island

Norway is surrounded by many islands west of the mainland.  Today, Kristine, along with much of her family and I took a short trip to one of the islands.  We took a car ferry to a large island and then a smaller ferry for passengers only to the next and final island.

Passenger ferry that took us to the small island.

Not sure what this building represents but I like it
so I decided it was worthy of this blog.

Notice the "UFO" sign...

Fire department on the island.

Post-office

An old church bell near the cemetery.

A picnic tent connected to a lobster park where
people farm lobsters and sell them.  I believe they
have a display/museum or something too.  We
had a picnic right here outside the tent.

Water flow-age near our picnic area.

Kristine and her cousin who insisted on climbing
to the top of this large rock and immediately regretted
it once he finally got up there.

The path back to the UFO sighting area.  This hike
took about 15 minutes one way so much easier
than past hikes.

UFO this way!

So believe it or not this blank area is believed to
have had a UFO land here.  Back around 1975,
local claim dogs started barking out of control
while at the same time local finsherman sighted
what appeared to be an unidentified flying object
(UFO).  After that, there was a giant ring that
appeared in this area.  The ring was 5-9 cm
deep and approximately 40 cm in width.  Scientists
from the city of Bergen visited this area said it's
the largest UFO ring in the world and still cannot
come up with a reasonable explanation as to why
ring is there.  Also, locals have tried planting
just about anything, flowers, trees, and/or vegetables.
The only thing that can grow here is grass and nobody
knows why.  It's difficult to see the ring in the photos
I took but I promise it's there.

A picture of Kristine's uncle high up on the opposite
side of me trying to get a good picture of the UFO
ring.  The only was anyone had a good chance
of getting a successful picture was to climb up and
get a good vantage point.  Even with a good vantage
point, nobody really got a good photo.

A small pond/lake in the island.

Kristine and her cousin standing near the UFO ring.

There were a few small island near the island we
visited.  Instead of building bridges for the few
people using the islands, locals created this cable
ferry to get from one island to the next.  The
ferry can only hold so much weight/people so
we split the group in two to cross to another
island.

Next group coming across.

The building I took a picture of earlier, up close this time.

Another weekend at Amdahl

Looks like Kristine's dad tipped a little
too far during a kayak ride!

Kristine's grandmother is an excellent artist.
She has a really nice art gallery of paintings
particularly of nature.  Kristine and I took
many photos of this freshwater pond found
at the Amdahl farm in hopes that one day
her grandmother could paint it for us.

Kristine and her cousins by the beach.

Expert fisherman!

Smashing snail shells for fish bait.

Got one!

Close-up!

Kristine's uncle trying out the kayak.

After each catch, the twins enjoy placing
the fish in a bucket with water to watch
them swim around until we eventually
release them back into the ocean.

Kristine's cousin kayaking I believe for
the first time, but don't quote me on that.

We have the cousins lay down on the dock
while fishing.  They can also see the small
fish easier this way.
